Integration of gender into SEforALL initiative
ENERGIA provided guidance to the Global Facilitation Team (GFT) of the SEforALL initiative on how to integrate gender in SEforALL activities and decision making processes via direct engagement with the GTF in face-to-face meetings and the review of policy and program documents.

Gender and Energy Compact
A coalition initiated by ENERGIA, Global Women’s Network for the Energy Transition (GWNET) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and supported by the Governments of Iceland, Ecuador, Nepal, Kenya and Sweden launched a Gender and Energy Compact to catalyze action towards gender equality and women’s empowerment to accelerate a just, inclusive and sustainable energy transition.

Actions on clean cooking by 2030
With more than 2.6 billion people without access to clean cooking technologies as of 2019, ENERGIA focused its advocacy activities on ensuring that this theme would be considered in the international political agenda. Major efforts are needed to bridge this gap and immediate action is required to scale up universal access to clean cooking technologies and services.

Integration of gender in Senegal’s national energy action plan
With support from our Empowering Women, Engendering Energy (EWEE) program, ENERGIA partner, Senegal-based Energy for Impact, supported the country’s Ministry of Energy to include gender in its long-term action plan for the energy sector, the Senegalese Rural Electrification Action Plan (LPDSE).

Development of Kenya’s National Gender Policy
With support of our Empowering Women, Engendering Energy (EWEE) program, ENERGIA partner Practical Action supported activities undertaken by Kenya’s Ministry of Energy to develop, finalize and launch the National Gender Policy for the Ministry of Energy. This policy is the first national Gender Policy in the energy sector ever.

Integration of gender into the SDG7 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) review
ENERGIA’s participation in the Multi-Stakeholder Technical Advisory Group on Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7-TAG) offered the opportunity to advocate for gender inclusion in the first review of progress towards SDG7.

Developing and disseminating publications
ENERGIA focused on the importance of sharing communications products to raise awareness and contribute to influencing the public and private sector on the linkages between gender and energy access.

Establishing the Gender and Energy Innovation Facility
Gender innovation, meaning gender approaches, processes and practices for energy access that deviate from the norm, is non-existent in the energy sector. ENERGIA established the Gender and Energy Innovation Facility to address this gap.

Gender mainstreaming at the institutional level
Gender mainstreaming continued to be crucial and cross-cutting in most of ENERGIA’s activities. ENERGIA supported ministries of energy, rural electrification agencies, electric utilities and nationally implemented donor programs to apply a gender lens to organizational processes, practices and operations.

Collaborating at the national level
ENERGIA continued to partner with national institutions and local stakeholders to influence national strategies, energy policies and action plans. This inclusive approach allowed ENERGIA to collaborate with different actors and fully support the integration of gender strategies at all levels, from households to governments.
