Skip to: Building evidence: Using research and implementation on the ground

Energia Advocacy website

During Phase 5, ENERGIA strengthened its advocacy activities through working with partners to build an evidence base, while also enhancing credibility with on-the-ground results and robust empirical research. ENERGIA contributed to the activities under the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General in 2011, as a member of the advisory board.

The main goals of SEforALL were to advance universal access to modern energy services, double the rate of improvement of energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. This provided ENERGIA an opportunity to advocate for a gender-inclusive approach to expanding energy access. With the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015, through which the international community pledged to work on addressing global challenges and build an inclusive, sustainable and equal future, ENERGIA collaborated with strategic partners to ensure that gender was not overlooked. Specifically, we worked on the integration of gender in the indicators on air pollution, unpaid work and clean cooking, we started a research program to collect evidence on gender and energy, and participated as members in the Multi-stakeholder SDG7 (on energy access) Technical Advisory Group represented by our International Coordinator and Program Manager, Sheila Oparaocha.

ENERGIA reinforced its communications strategy to create a platform to amplify the needs and challenges faced by women energy entrepreneurs, as well as to share the urgency for bringing a gender perspective to high level international and regional energy policy dialogues and intergovernmental negotiations.
